He is a Recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal (1997), three NASA Space Flight Medals (1984, 1996, 2000), and eleven Honorary Doctorates. Mr. Garneau was named a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2003 and served as Chancellor of Carleton University from 2003 to 2008.
